Raleigh Chapter of the Afro-American Historical and Genealogical Society Hosts Successful 2024 Conference

Governor Mansion Raleigh, N.CGovernor's MansionRaleigh N.C. Governor Mansion at night among the backdrop of a blue shy. Light shine bright on the porch illuminating people standing to greet conferencegoers to the AAHGS.
Early in 1977, a small group of historians and genealogists met informally to explore problems of mutual interest. Among the concerns discussed was the possible need for an organization that would focus largely, but not exclusively, on the family history and genealogy of minority groups in the belief that these groups had been largely overlooked over the years. No definite plans were made to form such an organization at this time, but it was agreed that those interested would give further thought to the idea, would discuss it with their colleagues, and would meet at a later date to pursue the possibility and desirability of establishing such an organization. This initial, informal meeting proved ultimately to mark the actual beginning of the Afro-American Historical and Genealogical Society (AAHGS), the broad purposes of which would be to foster and encourage historical and genealogical studies of families of all ethnic groups, with special emphasis upon Afro-Americans since the greatest deficiency was to be found in this area. Since 1977, thirty-four chapters have been created in twenty states. The vibrant city of Raleigh, North Carolina, played host to the Afro-American Historical and Genealogical Society Conference from February 2nd to February 4th, 2024. Organized by the dedicated members of the Raleigh Chapter, the conference begun at the State Archives Building on 109 E. Jones Street, offering a tour that beautifully interwove the threads of African American history, genealogy, and cultural heritage.

Zweli Williams, owner of Durham's popular Zimbabwean restaurant Zweli's, eloquently described cooking as an act of love.

Opening remarks, led by the Raleigh Chapter, concluded with conference-goers moving to the Yancey Building, where they were equipped with invaluable tools to trace family history, from graveyards to digital public information.

Dreamkeepper-4Dreamkeepper-4

An Essential Historical Preface to My Fellow Futurists

Every American of African descent descends from a prior generation that refused to give in and give up, amidst racial oppression. Due to our unique history in the Americas, we can all lay claim to a unique superpower of epigenetic resilience, born of individual and collective refusal to lay down and give up the ghost, while held within the inhuman and impossible captivity of the ships of the middle passage that reached  American shores. We are the remnant of the strongest of the strong survivors. Mind you, we are now 46.8 million strong.

IMG_6609IMG_6609

Our ancestors were futurists, even within the shackled hold of the ships, before the word was even conceived! Long before the middle passage. We were the futurists of ancient kingdoms: Kemet, Cush, Songhai. So many.

IMG_6657IMG_6657

Having survived 246 (1619-1865) years of captivity in America, by sheer force of will, faith, and self-preparedness, there is a collective legacy of resilience and God-given brilliance that is currently a  “sleeping giant” within each of us.

IMG_6515IMG_6515

It re-emerged, during Reconstruction to result in unapparelled  collective recovery, revival and thrival.  So effectively did we educate, organize, churn our dollars internally and begin to build infrastructures for the future, that a collective backlash of fear resulted. Their fear of karma. Jim Crow laws ensued, bringing to a halt our marvels of futurist expression.   Our “sleeping giant” of faith, knowledge acquisition, and collective economic mobilization would re-awaken, briefly during the Niagara Movement, and the Civil Rights Era.

Every Single RightEvery Single Right Niagara FoundersNiagara Founders

The power of African American collective futurism has become submerged in the decades following, in preference for self-absorbed acquisition, consumption, and self-centered expenditure of our 1.6 Trillion disposable income, which we send out and beyond our community 365 days a year.

disposable incomedisposable income

African Americans have become full of contradictions in their economic priorities. What did we forget to save, give, spend wisely, and invest in kinship community, uplift and fortify the two parent family? We seem to have forgotten the power of  “churn”, reciprocity, kindness, togetherness, intentionality, practiced by our ancestors. We have become oblivious to the fact that, no matter our affluence, we remain captive to the same 1619 Legacy economy and hegemony that profiteered from the bondage of Africans during slavery, and now profiteers from the financial, strategic, and spiritual unpreparedness of all citizens, regardless of ethnicity, in 2023. We are still in the Plantatrix.

An ominous prediction awaits our children, and their children, if we do not resurrect and deploy the futurism of our forefathers. By 2053, African American median wealth is predicted to fall to zero. What does this mean? Life-long labor, life-long debt, no hope of retirement, and diminished quality of life.

What would the ancestors say, of our state of affairs today?

Dreamkeepper-6Dreamkeepper-6

When God gives you something to do, he will not leave you alone. He will send calamity to turn your attention back to Him, and God alone.

My wake up call, came in 1996.

I am graduate of University of San Francisco, with a BA in Business Administration. I achieved honors certification in Computer Aided Design Drafting from Durham Technical Community College. I have over 30 years of combined experiences in amateur radio technology, digital graphics, website development, and cross-platform Android/iPhone mobile app development.

In spite of all of my acquired education and certification, all of that meant nothing, when I found myself, in 1996, totally devastated financially and strategically, in the aftermath of hurricane Fran. By faith, and a refusal to give into self-loathing and despair, I revived.

It was then, that I decided to never again find myself, or my young children at that time, in such a vulnerable position again.  I could not blame my situation on a failed marriage, “The Man”, or Satan. One must change. Pam Kelly became a prepper.

Futurist Pam Kelly
Since 1996, in the after math of Hurricane Fran, Pam Kelly self-identifies as a prepper, not the doomsday sort, or the or the TV show “Survivor” type. There is, perhaps a futility in being a doomsday prepper, if that variety’s numbers are only 10%. The remaining 90% of the unprepared have an arsenal too: being the majority!  It is in society’s best interest to promote and provide equity of access to financial, strategic, and spiritual preparedness for all.

From a cultural standpoint, people of African descent in America, will continue to experience personal and collective “doomsdays”, no matter our social standing, celebrity, or affluence,  as long as we are immersed in a in a 1619 legacy economy and society that continues to dispense justice and injustice based upon the antiquated supremacist construct of race. Race must become dismembered and retired. A preparedness-driven economy has the economic power to do that. By establishing equitable access to preparedness for all, there remains only one human race, and two kinds of people: The prepared and the unprepared.

“There can be no enduring social justice and access to economic opportunity for all Americans until a preparedness-driven economy is a part of it.” - Pam Kelly, Founder, iPrep2Thrive

The time is coming when skin color will not matter. Who do you want in your foxhole? The prepared or unprepared. Pam Kelly faced her decision in 1996.  The COVID Pandemic forced others to make their decision too, setting aside all man-made distinctions of “race”, in preference for being prepared and associating with those who value its benefits. Culture, ethnicity, tribe will always remain, as God divined human attributes.

Pam Kelly now self-identifies as a “Futurist Prepper” or “Life-Cycle Prepper”.  She believes in better  futures, in spite of how the present looks, and prepares for it; financially, strategically, spiritually.

Cyber Futuristiprep2trive works to prepare us for a bright economic future.

Along her journey, Pam Kelly shared her situation with an A.M.E. Minister, Rev. M. Jordan, who said to her, “Pam, you must learn to live at less than 100% of your dollar”.  Recently divorced, with two young children, and a home to maintain, she listened to his advice and politely responded, “I can’t do that right now, Reverend.” He compassionately said, “It’s tough for you now. Just start where you are, with just a dollar. Save each week and you will arrive there. You must also give. Reduce your spending. Many things you don’t need. You will stumble along the way, but never give up, on yourself. You’ll get there.”  Awakening.

From the Reverend’s compassionate wisdom, Pam Kelly devised a system: 5-10-10-75™. Hardly a new invention. It is an innovative application of traditional financial wisdom.

Invest in your kinship community 5%, , Save 10%+, Give back 10% , Spend 75% or less of your dollar, and you will prosper.  Financial Preparedness pays.

Furthermore, Pam Kelly has boldly launched a  mobilization towards a  5-10-10-75™ prepared populace, that saves, gives back, spends wisely, and supports their kinship communities, and offers the best hope of revival and survival of all of us, as one human “race.” There is no black or white, only the prepared and the unprepared.

Pam Kelly is committed to dismembering the 2053 economic prediction within her kinship community, by every legitimate means necessary, with all deliberate speed. She is not alone, her futurist ancestors surround her: Tubman, DuBois, Malcolm, Dr. King. So many.

H. Rap Brown, born Hubert Gerold Brown in 1943, emerged as a prominent figure during the civil rights movement of the 1960s. As a leader of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), he advocated for racial equality and social justice. Brown's passionate speeches and activism led him to the forefront of the struggle, where he worked alongside luminaries like Malcolm X and Stokely Carmichael (Kwame Ture).

In the late 1970s, H. Rap Brown embraced Islam and took on a new identity as Imam Jamil Al-Amin. This transformation marked a significant shift in his life. As a devout Muslim, he dedicated himself to promoting peace, justice, and community development. His efforts in bridging the gap between his earlier activism and Islamic principles revealed a complex and evolving worldview.

The Political Prisoner

Tragically, Imam Jamil's life took a dark turn when he was convicted in 2002 for the murder of a police officer in Atlanta. The circumstances surrounding the case remain controversial, with claims of wrongful conviction and a flawed legal process. His supporters argue that his incarceration is a result of his unwavering commitment to justice and challenging the status quo.

Despite being incarcerated, Imam Jamil's legacy endures. He continues to inspire activists and futurists who believe in his vision of a just society. The fight for his release remains a rallying cry for those who question the fairness of his trial and the circumstances surrounding his imprisonment.

Wells Society for Investigative Reporting was established, playing a crucial role in promoting diversity and excellence in investigative journalism. The society continues Wells's commitment to truth and justice by providing training, mentorship, and support for journalists of color. In doing so, it not only honors the memory of a trailblazer but also works towards a more inclusive and equitable future for investigative reporting.

Among these luminaries, William Monroe Trotter, a prominent journalist, civil rights activist, and social critic, played a central role. This blog post will delve into Trotter's life and his contributions as a futurist in the Niagara Movement.

Early Life and Activism:
Born in 1872 in Boston, William Monroe Trotter was a descendant of African American and Native American heritage. A graduate of Harvard University, he became a skilled orator, writer, and journalist, with a keen understanding of the complexities of racial injustice in America.

Founding the Niagara Movement:
In 1905, Trotter, along with W.E.B. Du Bois and others, founded the Niagara Movement, named after the group's first meeting location near Niagara Falls, Canada. The movement aimed to confront the racial inequalities and systemic injustices that plagued the nation. William Monroe Trotter's role in this organization exemplified his futurist vision for civil rights.

Key Contributions as a Futurist:

1. **Fighting for Full Civil and Political Rights:** Trotter, much like his Niagara Movement colleagues, was a staunch advocate for the full realization of civil and political rights for African Americans. His futurist perspective envisioned a future in which all citizens had the right to vote, access to education, and equal protection under the law.

2. **Direct Action and Protest:** Trotter was a proponent of direct action and civil disobedience as tools for change. He believed that passive resistance and vocal protest were crucial in challenging the status quo and forcing the nation to confront its injustices.

3. **Championing Anti-Lynching Legislation:** Trotter was a vocal advocate for federal anti-lynching legislation. He understood that the horrors of lynching were a profound stain on America's moral fabric and believed that only federal intervention could put an end to this form of racial terror.

4. **Racial Unity and Global Perspective:** Trotter, like other futurists of the Niagara Movement, recognized the importance of unity among African Americans and their allies. He also embraced an international perspective, seeking support and solidarity from global communities to press for racial equality in the United States.

Legacy and Inspiration:
William Monroe Trotter's legacy as a futurist in the Niagara Movement remains an enduring source of inspiration for those fighting for justice and equality. His fearless advocacy, progressive ideals, and tireless efforts laid the groundwork for the civil rights movements of the 20th century.

Conclusion:
William Monroe Trotter's role in the Niagara Movement reflects his vision of a more equitable future, where racial discrimination, segregation, and injustice were replaced by equality and justice. His contributions as a futurist continue to serve as a guiding light in the ongoing struggle for civil rights. Trotter's unwavering commitment to a brighter future for all has left an indelible mark on the pages of American history, reminding us that it is the futurists of the past who have paved the way for progress and change.

3. Economic Opportunity:

Recognizing that economic empowerment was crucial for achieving true equality, the Niagara Movement leaders called for economic opportunities for African Americans. They highlighted the importance of job access, equal pay, and the eradication of economic disparities rooted in racial discrimination.

4. Education:

Education was a cornerstone of the Niagara Movement's futurist vision. Its leaders understood that education was the key to achieving social and economic progress. They pushed for access to quality education and the removal of barriers to higher learning, ultimately laying the groundwork for future generations of African Americans to excel academically.

5. Unity and Activism:

The Niagara Movement was founded on the principle of unity among African Americans and their allies. Leaders urged the community to actively engage in the fight for civil rights, promoting grassroots activism as a means to achieve social change. They called on African Americans to join forces in the pursuit of justice and equality.

https://toomuchtvinc.zenfolio.com/blog/2023/11/re-imagine-a-world-without-pesticides--- Re-Imagine A World Without Pesticides - sponsored by Toxic Free NC and guided by Bernard Obie

On a beautiful Saturday, October 21, 2023, we had the privilege of embarking on a journey into the heart of sustainable agriculture with Bernard Obie, the visionary behind Abanitu Organics. Hosted by Toxic Free NC, this walking tour aimed to Re-Imagine A World Without Pesticides and took place on the very land where the Obie family's legacy began over a century ago.

IMG_0583IMG_0583

Abanitu Organics, a thriving farm with a rich history, can trace its roots back to 1906 when Lucy Obie, the daughter of Carolyn, a formerly enslaved woman, made a remarkable purchase. She acquired 5 acres of land for just $50, a seemingly small transaction that would set the stage for generations of sustainable farming. Lucy's son, John Thomas Obie, later journeyed to Big Four, West Virginia, where he toiled in coal mines for a mere twenty-five cents a day. Through sheer determination and hard work, he managed to save enough money to acquire additional land, significantly expanding the family farm upon his return to North Carolina. Over the years, this once-modest 5-acre plot blossomed into an expansive farm covering more than 100 acres.

IMG_0685IMG_0685

Our tour commenced approximately 100 yards from the family house, where we were greeted by the sight of mature collards growing in a meticulously curated space, nearly ready for harvest. This picturesque setting was a testament to the dedication and care put into every crop at Abanitu Organics.

IMG_0527IMG_0527

Farmer Obie then led us to a barn, a structure that held not only farming tools but also the spirit of community. In times gone by, communities would rally together to build the necessary infrastructure for their local farmers. This tradition of solidarity and mutual support was a vital component of sustaining the farm and the livelihoods it provided.

IMG_0536IMG_0536

As we continued on, we ventured another 50 yards to observe seedlings emerging from the clay soil. Bernard Obie shared with us the farm's philosophy, which included the limited use of organic fertilizers. Instead, the emphasis was on treating the soil with respect and nourishing it with carbon to maintain a healthy microbial community, which, in turn, ensured the well-being of the plants.

IMG_0558IMG_0558

The tour reached its poignant climax at the Harambee Circle, a place with a deep, personal significance. Established following the passing of Bernard Obie's father, this space served as a sanctuary for healing. Beneath graceful arches, we explored a place of fellowship. Benches, thoughtfully positioned in a semi-circle, formed a design reminiscent of a half-moon, surrounding a bistro table and chairs placed at the center of five trees. Farmer Obie described the Harambee Circle as a place to convene with the divine, an oasis of reflection and spirituality in the heart of the farm.

IMG_0643IMG_0643

To cap off this remarkable journey, we enjoyed a light lunch comprising a medley of vegetables sourced directly from the farm, complemented by refreshing ginger lemonade. It was a fitting conclusion to an enlightening experience that celebrated the farm's past, present, and future.

IMG_0693IMG_0693

The tour of Abanitu Organics, sponsored by Toxic Free NC and guided by Bernard Obie, offered us a glimpse into the enduring legacy of a family farm, rooted in resilience and guided by sustainable practices. This event encouraged us to reimagine a world without pesticides and inspired hope for a future where agriculture and community thrive in harmony. Abanitu Organics stands as a living testament to the power of hard work, community support, and a deep connection to the land.

Introduction: Halloween is a time for costumes, candy, and community, and nowhere was this spirit more evident than at Mineral Springs Middle School in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. This year, the school hosted a special event that not only embraced the spooky season but also put a health-conscious twist on the traditional trick-or-treating experience. Alpha Omega Media Development was on the scene to capture the excitement, and we had the privilege of interviewing Jaden Franklin, President of Rams for Hope, the organization that partnered with the school to provide healthy alternatives to the sugary treats usually associated with Halloween.

MVI_0387

A Healthier Halloween:

Jaden Franklin, the President of Rams for Hope, had a vision of promoting a healthier Halloween by providing banana snacks and mineral water for the children. In a season where kids typically receive an abundance of sugary treats, Franklin's initiative aimed to offer a nutritious and refreshing option. This unique approach not only encouraged children to make healthier choices but also raised awareness about the importance of balanced nutrition, particularly during a season of indulgence.

Revitalizing the School and Community:

MVI_0397

Nikhiya Young, the Family Engagement Coordinator, played a crucial role in putting together the Trunk or Treat event. Her goal was not just to celebrate Halloween but also to revitalize both the school and the surrounding community. Events like these offer a fantastic opportunity for families to come together, get to know one another, and strengthen their connections with the school. The spirit of community building was evident in every aspect of the event, from the engaging activities to the creative costumes worn by the children and adults alike.

MVI_0414

A Symbol of Giving Back:

Forsyth County Sergeant Selena Ligons, a proud Winston-Salem State University alumna, was also present at the event, representing law enforcement and the spirit of giving back to the community. She, along with other law enforcement personnel, joined the celebration to ensure the safety and enjoyment of all attendees. This collaboration between the community and law enforcement demonstrates the importance of building positive relationships and trust within neighborhoods.

The Atmosphere of Fun and Inclusivity:

The Trunk or Treat event at Mineral Springs Middle School wasn't just about healthy snacks or community building; it was also a whole lot of fun. The school's parking lot was transformed into a Halloween wonderland, with decorated car trunks, spooky music, and vibrant costumes. Families brought their creativity to life through the intricate and imaginative decorations on their car trunks. Children, accompanied by parents and guardians, went from trunk to trunk, collecting treats, playing games, and enjoying the Halloween-themed activities.

In Conclusion:

The Trunk or Treat event at Mineral Springs Middle School, made possible through the collaborative efforts of Rams for Hope, Family Engagement Coordinator Nikhiya Young, and community members like Sergeant Selena Ligons, was a prime example of a community coming together for a common purpose. It showcased the spirit of Halloween as a time for celebration, connection, and, in this case, a commitment to healthier alternatives to traditional treats. This event not only revitalized the school and the community but also symbolized the power of collective efforts to make a positive impact. It's a testament to the notion that Halloween is not just about costumes and candy; it's about the people and the connections that make a community truly special.

Lights, camera, action! The campus of Winston-Salem State University is abuzz with excitement as a new era of media and technology takes center stage. On a crisp autumn evening, students gathered for the inaugural interest meeting of Alpha & Omega Media Development, a thriving chapter under the umbrella of Technology, Media, and Telecommunications (TMT). The purpose? To create and produce positive programming for HBCU TV, a groundbreaking initiative poised to make waves.

President Alexander O'neal Jones-Thomas Sets the Stage

Alex | President | Alpha & Omega

As we settled into the meeting room, it was clear that something extraordinary was in the making. President Alexander O'neal Jones-Thomas, a visionary with a passion for storytelling, welcomed the eager audience. With enthusiasm and conviction, he outlined the purpose and potential of Alpha & Omega Media Development. It was a call to action, a rallying cry for students to channel their creative energies into something meaningful and impactful.

The highlight of the evening? The unveiling of our chapter's bylaws. These governing principles not only provide structure and guidance but also emphasize our commitment to professionalism, diversity, and innovation. It was a defining moment that set the stage for what's to come.

Vice President Jaden Franklin: A Visionary Leader

The Moderator and the Four Types of Social Justice:

Kwadjo Asera Ofori, the moderator of the summit, skillfully guided the conversations and set the stage for the day's discussions. One of the first topics addressed was the concept of social justice. Ofori began by defining the four types of social justice: distributive justice, retributive justice, restorative justice, and corrective justice. These four pillars provided a framework for understanding and addressing societal inequalities and injustices.

During the African American Cultural Solutions Equity Summit, Dr. Elijah Mickel delivered an insightful discussion on the concepts of Maat and Isfet. Drawing from ancient Egyptian mythology and philosophy, Dr. Mickel explored the significance of these concepts in the pursuit of social justice and equity.

Dr. Mickel emphasized that Maat represents the universal order and harmony that should guide individuals and societies. It embodies principles such as truth, justice, fairness, and righteousness. Living in alignment with Maat involves upholding these values and working towards creating a just and balanced society.

Conversely, Isfet represents the forces of chaos and imbalance. It encompasses negative qualities and actions that disrupt the natural order and lead to social injustices. Dr. Mickel highlighted that Isfet manifests in various forms, including violence, dishonesty, inequality, and corruption. Identifying and addressing Isfet is crucial in the pursuit of equity and social justice.

Dr. Mickel's discussion on Maat and Isfet provided a philosophical foundation for understanding the importance of striving for balance and justice in contemporary society. By drawing from ancient wisdom, he emphasized the need for individuals and communities to recognize and combat Isfet, while actively working towards upholding the principles of Maat.

Insights and Discussions: Throughout the summit, the panelists engaged in thought-provoking discussions, exploring various avenues for achieving equity and social justice within African American communities. Miss Geraldine Alshamy shared her experiences as a community advocate, highlighting the importance of grassroots movements and empowering individuals to take action. Kevin Bobbitt emphasized the significance of cultural science and system of unity in fostering understanding and promoting equitable solutions. Katie Gail shed light on the power of storytelling and reclaiming narratives to challenge societal biases and misconceptions.

Judge Damian McCullers provided legal insights and addressed the role of the justice system in addressing social injustices. Miss Stella Paterson shared her perspectives as the chief of police, highlighting the importance of building trust between law enforcement and the communities they serve.

Conclusion:

The African American Cultural Solutions Equity Summit was an enlightening and inspiring event that brought together passionate individuals from diverse backgrounds. Through engaging panel discussions and a commitment to promoting social justice, the summit served as a platform for uniting cultures and seeking solutions for achieving equity within African American communities. The insightful discussions and perspectives shared by the panelists provided attendees with valuable insights and inspiration to continue the work towards a more just and equitable society.

The KCSSU recently held a series of summits to discuss the important issue of equity. Attendees discussed a range of topics related to equity, including education, housing, and mental health. The summit provided an important opportunity for African American leaders and community members to come together and share their perspectives on these important issues.

Raleigh, North Carolina is often referred to as the "Silicon Valley of the East", and for good reason. The city, along with the surrounding area, is home to the famous Research Triangle Park, one of the largest and most successful research parks in the world. The park is named after the three major research universities in the region: Duke University, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and North Carolina State University.

IMG_7685IMG_7685

The Research Triangle Park has become a hub for innovation and technology, attracting some of the biggest names in the industry. Major companies like IBM, Cisco Systems, and GlaxoSmithKline have all set up operations in the park, creating a thriving ecosystem of startups, entrepreneurs, and researchers. The park is also home to a number of research institutions, including the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences and the National Institute of Statistical Sciences.

But Raleigh is more than just a research hub - it's also a principality place to live and work. The city is consistently ranked as one of the best places to live in the United States, with a high quality of life,  and a thriving arts and culture scene. However, despite being a thriving and prosperous city, African Americans in Raleigh face significant disparities in housing, education, and income. According to recent data, African Americans in Raleigh are more likely to live in poverty, have lower incomes, and face greater challenges in accessing quality healthcare and education. The KSCCU Equity Summitt addressed these disparities by leading a discussion on affordable housing, education, and mental health programs that specifically target African American communities. The summit provided an important opportunity for African American leaders and community members to come together and share their perspectives on these important issues.

MVI_6503

HOUSING

In recent years, Raleigh has experienced a severe housing crisis. As the city has grown, the demand for housing has increased, leading to skyrocketing housing prices and a shortage of affordable options for low-income families. Many residents are struggling to find suitable housing within their budgets, and homelessness rates have risen as a result. Nonprofits and community organizations are working hard to address the situation, but the problem persists.
Councilman Corey Branch explained how the city is currently exploring a range of solutions, including the construction of more affordable housing units and the implementation of policies that protect renters from being pushed out of their homes due to rising rents.

Mental HealthThe DSM-5, the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders mentioned in the African American Equity Summit MENTAL HEALTH

Mental health is a critical issue that affects individuals across all communities. However, studies have shown that African Americans are less likely to seek mental health treatment than other racial groups. This disparity can be attributed to several factors, including cultural stigma, lack of access to mental health resources, and systemic racism.

One of the main reasons for this disparity is the cultural stigma surrounding mental health in the African American community. Many individuals within this community view mental health problems as a sign of weakness or a lack of faith. This stigma can prevent individuals from seeking treatment and can lead to feelings of shame and isolation.

Another factor contributing to the mental health disparities in the African American community is the lack of access to mental health resources. Many African American communities are underserved, and there is often a shortage of mental health professionals in these areas. Additionally, some individuals may not have health insurance or cannot afford to pay for mental health services out of pocket.

Finally, systemic racism can also contribute to mental health problems in the African American community. Racism can lead to chronic stress, which can have a negative impact on both physical and mental health. Additionally, African Americans may face discrimination when seeking medical care, which can lead to mistrust of the healthcare system and further discourage individuals from seeking treatment.

To address these mental health disparities, KCSSU it is important to increase awareness and education about mental health within the African American community. This includes reducing the stigma surrounding mental health and promoting the importance of seeking treatment. It is also essential to increase access to mental health resources in underserved communities and to address issues of systemic racism that can impact mental health.

EDUCATION

The education crisis facing African Americans in Raleigh is a complex issue that has significant implications for the community. One of the most pressing concerns is the school-to-prison pipeline, which refers to the trend of students being pushed out of schools and into the criminal justice system.

This trend disproportionately affects African American students, who are more likely to be suspended, expelled, and referred to law enforcement for disciplinary issues. In many cases, these students are punished for minor infractions that would be handled differently for their white peers.

The consequences of the school-to-prison pipeline are severe and long-lasting. Incarceration has been linked to a range of negative outcomes, including lower lifetime earnings, reduced job opportunities, and increased likelihood of recidivism.

Hi, my name is Paul Hunter. I am 22 years old. I was born in Oxford, North Carolina, but moved to Raleigh, North Carolina when I was 3. It's been a passion of mine to produce media ever since I can remember. Me and my family used to make skits, and goofy videos on a camcorder when I was young and by doing so, it sparked my interest in filmmaking. When I was 9, I've started using editing software like VEGAS Pro, Adobe Premiere Pro, etc... to produce YouTube content. I was terrified at first, but the more I used it, and learned new techniques, the more I improved, as well as my content. I try to make the highest quality of content as possible by experimenting with new effects, imitating my peers but also adding my uniqueness to it.

I'm a TMT Apprentice currently studying to become a studio manager to improve my skills and add cinematic value for my church, Stand in the Gate Ministries. TMT Youth Community Foundation provides guidance, resources and on-going support in the TMT Youth Apprenticeship Program. TMT Youth Apprentices receive on-the-job learning with related classroom instruction, while they learn a highly skilled trade. Their goal is to expose and train the youth of color to Industry Standard Tools to prepare them for entrepreneurial success in our global economy.

My vision for the long run is to master my craft in editing and filmmaking and have all the resources I need to make the best content possible for my church. I also want to succeed on YouTube and become a full-time content creator with millions of subscribers. It has always been a dream of mine to become a YouTuber, and if I put in my best efforts and stay consistent, I know that goal will be achievable. Lastly, I want to expand my skills outside of editing and filming. We're talking animation, sound production, and possibly writing. God has blessed me with an eye in film, so I'm willing to perfect that eye through Him. "I can do all things through Christ which strengthening me." - Philippians 4:13

https://toomuchtvinc.zenfolio.com/blog/2022/9/tmt-apprentice-elon-nesanet TMT Apprentice | Elon Nesanet

Hello beautiful people, My name is Elon Nesanet, I'm here to talk about my life mission.  I'm 20 years old born in Erie, Pennsylvania. I now live in raleigh, North Carolina where I am studying content and video production through TMT Youth Community Foundation ! My life mission is to create a healthier community by bringing us closer together as well as focusing on our passions and skills and how we can work together to create a safer more efficient community . I want to create a community life space where people can have the ability to learn and live a healthy human life, an area that allows people to focus on their passions. Mine include self sustainable living, growing our own foods producing our own power, water, ENERGY, work, thoughts and life . Today people are taught to go to work, buy a house and work until you're old and then live your free life. My goal is to create a place where people have the access to learn about and grow in what they love for example I love gardening so I would have the ability to go to this life space and learn about gardening as well as add to the community garden, I also love music at life space I would be able to have access to a music production studio and instruments this would bring other people who have similar interest to the same place to work together and bring our community closer while pursuing our dreams. including things such as a community gym, a TMT Youth Community Foundation studio, industrial  kitchens, sleeping pods, hygiene centers etc, etc, but of course this would take time, energy, and money.

I am a TMT apprentice learning how to fully produce content from start to finish using industry standard tools while working with the community to spread awareness of the opportunity and growth that The TMT Youth Community Foundation  offers to the community. TMT gives me the tools to create and reach out to the community as well as grow my production skills, such as shooting videos, live TV shows, high quality video editing, etc . Now I am able to build my digital footprint and find the people who share the same dream as me, preventing the school to prison pipeline and giving students an opportunity to be a part of something big and create in the community.

My long term goal is to spread this energy around the world so that we can elevate as a people instead of just specific individuals having control over our communities, giving the communities full control and opportunity to live a more human life. stopping negative gentrification and offering equal opportunities to everyone ending the slave lifestyle we live today of course the only way for this to work is if everyone contributes to the community life space and slowly grow it together.

On Saturday, August 6; 2022 a local nonprofit - Kemetic Cultural Science and System of Unity (KCSSU) sponsored 31 school age students to an overnight field trip to visit the National Museum of African American History and Culture. It is the only national museum devoted exclusively to the documentation of African American life, history, and culture. Executive Director, Kevin Kip Bobbitt,  and the KCSSU team works to ensure that children in Southeast Raleigh are exposed to history and travel.

KCSSU is an Afrikan-centered culturally-based organization that understands the importance of the knowledge of self and knowing one’s true culture, history, values, and traditions. KCSSU realizes and recognizes that the majority of the issues and problems faced by Afrikan people throughout the diaspora (and even on the continent), include, but are not limited to, self-hate, Afrikan-on-Afrikan violence, lack of self-motivation, lack of self-love, disrespect, and others, all stem from a lack of self-knowledge. Brother Bobbitt felt that exposing the youth of Southeast Raleigh to the architectural genius of Phil Freelon, elevation in spirit would occur; inspiring the children to follow their higher self into greatness.

IMG_7666IMG_7666

The trip begin before the break of dawn when the KCSSU bus rolled through the streets of Southeast Raleigh picking up students from home. The bus arrived in the parking lot of Roses on Martin Luther King Jr Blvd around 4:30a.m. Children got off the bus and walked right into a hot breakfast of chicken biscuits and hash browns while they waited for the fifty-five passenger charter bus to arrive. Parents greeted each other while sleepy children gathered luggage in preparation for the four hour bus ride to the nations capital. The bus arrived as scheduled to load chaperones and children. Brother Bobbitt  began the trip by calling on his mother Matriarch, Janie W. Green to say a word of prayer. Brother Bobbitt called the children to attention with the african word "ogo" which means listen up, listen attentively the children respond with "omay" which means we are listening.

KCSSU has numerous Afrikan-centered programs which focus on teaching all age groups the values of MA’AT, which embody the principles of truth, justice, order, balance, harmony, reciprocity, and righteousness. These principles help to develop an Afikan-centered consciousness in the individual and they help to restore love, unity, peace, and order in our families and communities. The "ogo-omay" call and response seemed to calm to the passengers from the morning hustle and bustle of breakfast, loading and boarding.

The four hour bus ride seemed to be a breeze to everyone on the trip as they slept their way to the nations capital. Participants arrived in the District of Columbia around 9:30a.m. and received a snack bag in front of the National Museum of Natural History.  Brother Bobbitt is keenly aware of how to wake the children up before exploring the four story museum that records the journey of enslaved African brought to America.  While parent volunteers were busy hydrating the children, Brother Bobbitt expresses his desire the to expand his summer excursions to Africa.  "I believe it is important for black children to understand the teachings of the original people to elevate to a higher self" exclaims Bobbitt has he instructs his team to gather the children to board the bus.  "KCSSU is standing in the gap for children and we are encouraging others to assist with their time, talent, and or resources to expose these children to the Motherland Summer 2023" asserted Brother Bobbitt as the happily fed children boarded the bus.

Upon arrival students learned how a local architect of the Raleigh, Durham community, Phil Freelon won the international competition to design the National Museum of African American History and Culture. Born and raised in Philadelphia, Pa, Freelon, graduated from North Carolina State University's College of Design with a Bachelor of Environmental Design in Architecture in 1975 and earned his Master of Architecture degree from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) two years later. Freelon was tasked with taking the pain, triumph, and perserverance of the African American experience and forming it into a structure. The team looked to African sources, such as Yoruban architecture, for inspiration. They sought to connect the building’s design to the geographic and cultural roots of African Americans. Their choice to envelop the building in bronze-colored lattice work also references the contributions of enslaved and free Black metalworkers in the American South. Their goal was to make the museum an extension of its contents, and an expression of the stories told inside of the museum.

Hello, my name is Briona Williams. I attend Shaw University  I am a senior majoring in mass communication. I was born and raised in Wilmington North Carolina. I knew what I wanted to do at a young age when it came to my future. I want to have my own cooking show or talk show. When I was little I used to go in the kitchen with my mom and pretend to cook with her on my little kitchen set an talk like I was on the video and showing people how to cook.

MVI_6474

The primary focus of this organization is to expose and train the youth of color living in vulnerable communities in S.T.E.A.M careers to prepare them for post-secondary education and entrepreneurial success in our global economy. Our organization engages youth ages 8-25. My role as a TMT mentee is hospitality person for example when we have events I am the person who sets up the food to greet people and also after the event is over I will be the person to clean up and make sure everything is back in order.

My 5-year future plan is to have everything in motion a year after I graduate. I want to produce a cooking show and to have things in motion maybe not have the cooking show yet but start off like cooking on YouTube. I know getting where I want to be and stuff will be hard and knowing that it takes time to get everything developed. I don’t wanna be all over the place when I graduate that’s why I made this set goal. The ability to have a goal and keep working towards that goal will make things easier because that’s what I’m chasing and want to follow.

IMG_8126IMG_8126 In this paragraph, I want to talk about what I go through on a daily basis and how I get through it.  Sometimes and how it’s hard for me to get through it is my anxiety and depression. Also how my mood changes and I just don’t want that to affect my future and affect the things that I want to do in my life. Right now it does affect lots of things that I do like the internship that I am in now I get very overwhelmed and I shut down immediately. I don’t really want it to be like that for the rest of my life.

This semester the TMT Youth Community Foundation enrolled more students than ever before. Covid-19 had influenced the way business was conducted. This contagious and deadly disease help to shape new operating standards for many businesses. Shaw University was not exempt from this sudden shift in business. The omicron variant of Covid-19 pushed America's workforce into a cyber seclusion forcing academia, corporations, and small businesses to figure out new workflows from the comforts of home. This new way of business created a huge opportunity for the TMT Youth Community Foundation and the Shaw students enrolled as TMT Mentees in our extended learning program.

This semester, nine students will operate as a film crew to create original programming for the TMT Youth Community Foundation.  On February 4th 2022 students received a TMT Workshop on Camera Shots and Angles. TMT Mentees received a virtual assignment to write about their personal goals and five year plan. On the campus of NC State, in the offices of Raleigh Founded students gain hands on experience on how to create content and tell a compelling story through the eyes of a camera.
